OAKLAND, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement today in response to passage of the Build Back Better Act in the House of Representatives.

Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“This is a historic moment. For months on end, advocates, activists, and young people from across our state raised their voices calling for bold climate action and pressuring Congress to deliver. Today, the House has passed the single largest investment in fighting the climate crisis that our country has ever made.

This progress would not have happened without the leadership of our champions: Senator Alex Padilla, Representatives Katie Porter, Mike Levin, Nanette Barragán, Tony Cárdenas, Jared Huffman, Alan Lowenthal, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. They got it done for Californians. They fought for funding for clean energy, fire prevention, and clean safe drinking water, and an end to offshore drilling off our coast – and delivered.

The Build Back Better Act will address urgent priorities for California. It includes investments to address wildfires and droughts. It provides incentives to help spur our transition to clean energy. It will address the shocking lack of clean and safe drinking water in our state. And it will advance climate justice by investing in the communities that have been hardest hit by the climate crisis and environmental racism. Black and Indigenous Californians and other communities of color have borne the greatest burden of climate change, pollution, and unsafe drinking water and it’s past time we address that.

But this is just the beginning. Now it is the Senate’s turn to pass the Build Back Better Act – with all of the climate investments from the House bill intact. This is our last best chance to make comprehensive investments in fighting the climate crisis. We can’t afford to delay this legislation any longer or reduce the critical climate investments included in the bill.

What we do will impact Californians for generations to come.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
