SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Climate Financial Risk Disclosure Act (SB 261). The bill will inform the rest of the country, allowing other states to make use of the reports published to mitigate their own risk. SB 261 is part of a corporate climate accountability package that will set a new standard for the entire nation. The bill is now headed to Governor Newsom’s desk to sign.
Statement from Melissa Romero, Senior Legislative Manager, California Environmental Voters:
“The Assembly Speaker and the Senate President continue to show true leadership with their vision and tenacity moving corporate accountability and responsibility forward. We are truly energized that climate risk disclosures are out of the Legislature, along with corporate emissions disclosures.
By shedding light on the potential financial impacts of climate change, SB 261 encourages businesses to adopt sustainable practices, invest in renewable energy, and transition away from a pollution-based economy. This will set the precedent for nationwide climate risk reporting standards, amplifying the impact of climate resilience efforts on a national scale.
We are grateful for Senators Wiener, Gonzalez, and Stern’s leadership in the fight to push the climate corporate accountability package across the finish line. We look forward to the Governor signing this into law and moving California forward on climate action.”
