HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – California Environmental Voters released the following statement in response to early reports of yet another oil spill off the coast of Orange County, California.

Statement from Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“Enough is enough. It was just seven weeks ago that the Orange County coast was devastated by an oil spill. Now, we’re hearing reports of another leak.

The only way we stop these types of oil spills is for our country to shift away from our dependence on fossil fuels and transition to clean, renewable energy. It’s past time to stop drilling.

This latest disaster highlights why we must pass bold climate legislation like the Build Back Better Act, which Orange County Representative Michelle Steel voted against just yesterday. This bill will spur our transition to clean, renewable energy and ban new offshore oil and gas leases along the Pacific Coast. But Rep. Steel yet again sided with oil interests over Orange County residents.

And at home, we need California’s state legislature to be more willing to stand up to corporate polluters and pass far-reaching climate and clean energy legislation.

If we don’t act, we’ll keep seeing this same situation again and again and our children and grandchildren will pay the price for generations to come.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
