SACRAMENTO, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) today issued the following statement in response to the California Air Resources Board’s passage of Advanced Clean Cars II, which will result in 100% of new car sales being zero-emission vehicles by 2035.

Statement from Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, EnviroVoters:

“2022 has become a year for climate optimism! The California Air Resources Board just passed a game-changing rule that will go a long way in helping the state and the country meet our climate goals.

“The transportation sector is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in California and nationwide. Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) codifies and sets key markers for achieving the Governor’s 2020 Executive Order banning the sale of non-electric vehicles by 2035. It is a critically important step towards addressing an enormous source of emissions and can and likely will be adopted by other states around the country just like its predecessor in Advanced Clean Cars I. Transitioning to cleaner vehicles will also have direct public health benefits, and will help reduce air pollution from smog and other particulates.

“Moving forward, we must continue to push and ensure that ACC II is implemented equitably and in a way that makes electric vehicles (EVs) accessible for frontline communities. This includes building much-needed EV infrastructure, working to procure more clean and renewable energy, and establishing the funding to complete these projects and make EVs more accessible and affordable. The U.S. just passed the largest climate and clean energy bill in the country with the Inflation Reduction Act. California can and must complement this by going further in implementing a Climate Courage Budget now and passing critical ballot measures like Proposition 30, the Clean Air Initiative, in November. This is all within our grasp.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
