SACRAMENTO, CA California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement today ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union address.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“Californians will be eager to hear President Biden share a strategy to address the multiple crises that our world is facing, from the life altering threat of climate change to the war in the Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as Americans deal with the daily challenges of these threats simultaneously, we rely on our leadership to have the vision and judgment to make progress on multiple fronts.

Tonight, we hope to hear President Biden issue a strong call for federal climate action. Just this week, the IPCC issued a report that underscores the impact climate change is having on our lives. Their research makes clear that incremental attempts to mitigate the effects of climate change are not sufficient. The time is now for transformational, systemic change and that starts by passing comprehensive, federal climate legislation.

The House did its job last year by passing legislation that included strong climate provisions. The Senate must act and pass a climate-focused legislative package now. We cannot delay action – even in the face of the multiple challenges we face. After all, leadership means making progress on many fronts at the same time.

We urge the President to lead the way and lay out a vision for addressing the climate crisis in the State of the Union. Californians will be listening and hoping to hear a strong call to action.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
