California League of Conservation Voters and League of Conservation Voters Echo Local Community Calls to Protect the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument
WEST COVINA, CALIFORNIA — California League of Conservation Voters CEO Sarah Rose and League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski released this statement ahead of today’s public meeting regarding the future of California’s San Gabriel Mountains. The meeting, hosted by Department of Agriculture and Forest Service officials, is meant to give local residents the chance to share their vision for how the San Gabriel Mountains can be permanently protected.
“Permanently protecting the San Gabriel Mountains would be a win for the community, the economy, and the environment.
Kudos to the Obama Administration for providing local residents the chance to talk about the importance of protecting this natural and cultural treasure. Representative Judy Chu has worked hard to protect the San Gabriel Mountains through legislation that is part of a longstanding campaign to preserve this area, but Congressional inaction has stopped her efforts dead in their tracks. That is why local communities are now turning to President Obama, whose administration continues to use an open and public process featuring local input when considering protecting our nation’s last remaining wild places.
Protecting this area means protecting clean drinking water, habitat for fragile plants and wildlife, and providing rare recreational opportunities for underserved and diverse communities. With 88% of Latino voters and 4 out of 5 Los Angeles County voters calling for protection of the San Gabriel Mountains and rivers, it’s time the president takes action and permanently protects these majestic mountains as a national monument.”
