LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the United Services Automobile Association’s (USAA), one of California’s major home insurance companies, request for a rate hike. USAA increased rates by 26% less than a year ago. This follows State Farm’s first-ever emergency rate hike approval in May, Mercury Insurance and the California State Automobile Association (CSAA) requesting rate hikes in August, and the FAIR Plan requesting a hike earlier this month.

Statement from Matt Abularach-Macias, Political & Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“California families will be hit again as yet another insurance company asks to hike rates. Every time insurers raise prices, working people are the ones who pay more to keep a roof over their heads. USAA is citing ‘severe weather’ for this hike request when the truth is that extreme wildfires and worsening heat are the direct result of decades of Big Oil’s greed and pollution.

It’s time to stop forcing ratepayers to shoulder the costs of the climate crisis while corporate polluters rake in record profits. California needs leaders who will hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for the destruction they’ve caused and ensure consumers are protected from skyrocketing premiums. The solution isn’t endless rate hikes, it’s making the biggest polluters pay their fair share.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
