SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Legislature’s packages on grid regionalization, energy affordability, refinery closures, and the absence of SB 131 clean-up legislation ahead of their September 12 deadline to pass bills.

Statement from Melissa Romero, Policy Advocacy Director, California Environmental Voters:

“The Legislature’s bills on grid regionalization (AB 825) and energy affordability (SB 254) show that California leadership has a vision and commitment to making energy safer, more affordable, and more reliable through electrification in partnership with other states. Poll after poll overwhelmingly shows that this is what voters want. At the same time, the Trump administration is attacking affordability for Americans, making energy more expensive, more unreliable, and more toxic.

The bigger picture is that demand for gas is down and refineries all over the country are closing. The longer we prop up the fossil fuel industry, the more susceptible Californians are to high gas prices and greed. The only way out is through clean transportation and fully funded, accessible transit options. Giving Big Oil their wishlist (SB 237) without doubling down on clean transportation options and investing in impacted oil and gas workers is not a solution.

Along with restoring critical protections for communities and endangered species undone by half-baked policy (SB 131) and advancing on long-overdue corporate accountability (SB 222, AB 1243, and SB 684), these are the most urgent pieces of unfinished business. Legislators will only deepen the health, affordability, and climate crises facing Californians if they don’t act this session.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
