OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Governor’s 2026-27 budget proposal.
Statement from Shannon Olivieri Hovis, Chief Strategy Officer, California Environmental Voters:
“We’re in a very difficult moment with federal leaders pulling funding from climate solutions and doubling down on fossil fuels, leaving California to shoulder escalating climate disaster costs. This week marked the anniversary of the most devastating climate disaster in our history and communities are still grieving and rebuilding, while the impacts of the climate crisis continue to drive up insurance, energy, and health costs. Californians are facing real affordability challenges, and corporate polluters are the only ones not paying their fair share. Instead of asking families to absorb the costs, the Legislature must look seriously at holding polluters accountable for the harm they’ve caused. The only path forward is to confront the cost of inaction through new revenue streams, build on the foresight shown by voters and elected leaders in passing the climate bond to protect communities, and continue investing in resilience through conservation and clean transportation that frees Californians from price gouging at the pump.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
