SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in support of the Legislature’s proposal to extend the cap and invest program.
Statement from Melissa Romero, Policy Advocacy Director, California Environmental Voters:
“The Legislature’s extension of cap and invest is necessary to keep California on track toward meeting its climate targets. At the same time, we’ve been clear all year: extending this program without deeper reform is a missed opportunity. Communities need real commitments to cleaning up our air, not more reliance on a system that has repeatedly failed to deliver on equity and public health.
This proposal can’t be separated from the other ways communities have been sold out this year through CEQA exemptions that fast-track polluting projects, healthcare cuts that hit working families hardest, and legislative attempts to weaken local air districts’ ability to protect public health. Each of these choices adds up to the same outcome of cleaner air and healthier communities being pushed to the side for corporate convenience.
We need the Legislature to commit to the unfinished business of reforms that actually cut pollution, deliver justice, and ensure the air we breathe is safe for all Californians.”
